Customers used to type "best marketing agency in Cairo" into Google and see 10 links. Today a growing share ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, and get a single answer with only 2 or 3 names. The question is: is your company one of them?
What is GEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is optimizing your content and digital presence so AI engines understand you, trust you and recommend you in their answers. It's built on the same foundations as SEO, but focuses on clarity, credibility and how easy you are to quote.
How does AI choose which companies to recommend?
- Clarity: pages that answer the question directly in the first two lines.
- Credibility: real numbers, customer reviews, clear expertise and a known author.
- Consistency: the same name, address and services on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
- Mentions elsewhere: articles, websites and communities that talk about you and link to your website.
7 practical steps to start with
1. Write direct answers
Every service page should open with a clear sentence: what the service is, who it's for, and roughly what it costs. Then the details. That's exactly what the models quote.
2. Add real FAQs
The questions your customers ask on WhatsApp are the same ones they ask ChatGPT. Put them, with their answers, on your pages.
3. Use structured data (schema)
Organization, Service, FAQ and Article markup tell machines who you are and what you offer in a language they understand.
4. Create an llms.txt file
A simple file at the root of your website that summarizes your company and its most important pages for AI engines. Our own website has an llms.txt file as an example.
5. Make your company details consistent everywhere
Review Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Facebook and directories, and make sure your name, address, phone number and founding year match exactly.
6. Collect ratings and reviews
Reviews on Google and review platforms are among the strongest trust signals, for people and machines alike.
7. Publish expert content regularly
Articles with real experience and numbers from your work make you a source that AI keeps coming back to.
How do you know if you're showing up?
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the kind of questions your customers ask: "best [your service] company in [your city]", and record the results every month. If you're not showing up, start with the steps above.
